Video – Four weddings and a funeral in which Carrie tells
Charles about her sexual history.
Film’s message – sex is good, fun, acceptable, without
hang-ups, without repercussions, without harm
People hate Christianity’s boundaries = restrictive
(illustration: airplanes and air traffic control)
Defeating the lies
Value of Sex
God created/invented (Gen 1:28)
Foundations of marriage: leave, cleave (join), unite
Jesus/Paul refer = high value on sex in marriage
(cp. Song of Songs, Proverbs)
God created, designed us for, part of our make-up =
a) not dirty or shabby, but humans made it so
b) special so not casual àcheapening
c) central – social, emotional, personal = marriage
Adultery = destroyer of trust, companionship, love
Vulnerability to sex
Harmless fun
(cp. teenage mother abandoned, wife betrayed children injured)
Story of King David and Bathsheba
- even David
What happened?
- sort of madness came over (hormones)
- one brick from wall = tumbling down
- lies, deception, murder
Sexual temptation (no websites on lying, Sabbath breaking, coveting)
Vigilance needed over sex
Jesus prohibits adultery of the mind (Matt 5:28)
- thinking about someone
(Illustration: Dave and Henry – conference – girl
interested – one accepted, one rejected – both hangovers
– both adulterers)
Marriages broken without sexual act – emotional level, intellectual
level, physical level
Need boundaries to help:
- no one safe from temptation
· Work at your marriage
· Avoid compromising situations
· Deepen spiritual life
- keep busy (cp. David staying behind)
- don’t play – rationalising of mere curiosity –
discipline, purity
- repent not cover up
Virtue of forgiveness
World-view = nothing to worry about
Church-view = total abomination
Christian-view = terrible but forgivable
(cp. John 8:1-11)
Conclusion
Church – promote value of single life àfriendship
Sex – made for marriage only
Us – offer God’s standard
(quote – Leon Morris – The Cross in the New Testament
– p. 390-1)
